Just about every student that I spoke with in preparing this story, agreed that education is extremely important for securing a high paying career but is that all education is worth; just to make money? Tim Matson, an Avila Senior and outfielder on the baseball team shared, "Back in Cali I could have a steady job right now, but college is allowing me to chase other opportunities too. Who knows maybe I'll start up a clothing company someday." He feels that as a communication major, the things he will learn could possibly help him to do that. Another Avila student Jason Bell says, "I'm going to be a doctor, which will make me money. I want to have enough to support my future wife and my family back in Cocoa Beach." So to Jason college is a way to a higher paying salary in his future.
Avila Professor, Dr. J. Anthony Snorgrass once said in a class I took from him, "learn not for money but to acquire knowledge and educate yourself." At first I disagreed. I felt that college was just an avenue to a better paying job. Then I analyzed my college career and realized that college is for an education. So I'll keep this in mind as I sit through my classes, stay up until five in the morning studying for tests, and stress over papers, just like all college students. Whether Avila students say they have a set goal in front of them or want a range of unlimited possibilities, understand that a college education leading you to your passion is certainly important; but the ideal is to have financially strong future.
