Avila Alumnus and former Avila Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach, Isaac Chew, is dancing his way into the NCAA post-season championship tournament. Serving as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at mid-major powerhouse Murray State University, in Murray, KY, Chew is leading his talented recruits to the next level.
The Racers have already received national attention for a stellar regular season. The first team to reach 30 wins in the NCAA, with a record of 30-4, the Racers suffered only one conference loss all year. Murray State was named Ohio Valley Conference champs and won their tournament outright last Saturday for an opportunity to move on to the Big Dance. Not only did they rival Kansas and Butler with their 17 game win-streak, but the Racers hold the distinction of being one of two teams in NCAA Division-I leading their conference in both scoring offense (78.7) and scoring defense (60.7).
Since joining the staff in 2007, Chew has assisted in the Racer's consistent overall record improvement. Recruiting elite talent, including last year's Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Ivan Aska and OVC All-Newcomer Team member Isacc Miles, Chew has been instrumental in introducing young players to the Murray State mentality. His continued efforts, in fact, helped the Racers name five members to the All-OVC Team, including Freshman of the Year, this 2009-2010 season.
The Racers will learn their designated seed and first round opponent this Selection Sunday. It is more than evident; however, that Coach Chew and his Murray State Racers are already making their presence known in Division-I NCAA athletics.
