Its February, so its black history month and the Black Student Union (BSU) has many events planned for this month for fun and educational purposes. The first event is Spades & Kool-Aid is a social event featuring card games and refreshments.            Another event is open mic night. This event was held on Wednesday evening, February 17th in the Thornhill Art Gallery. Any and all talents were welcome to step up to the microphone and speak their thoughts on black history and its celebration.

And if you’re familiar with the book by Gustavo Arellano - “Ask a Mexican” or watched Dave Chappell’s popular “Ask a Black Dude” on Comedy Central, students at Avila actually had the opportunity to submit questions in the box in the Marian Center that will be answered by a special panel of Black history researchers, professors, and community activists.  According to Marva Moore, BSU President,  “we wanted people to ask questions and not feel awkward. Just be able to ask what they want to know, but normally wouldn’t ask”.  The BSU borrowed the idea from a Chappelle Show skit, but thought it could be approached in a more intellectual and academic manor to raise consciousness of black history as part of the American cultural fabric.
